Russian Portrait: Madonna’s Super Fan

Russian Portrait: Madonna's super fan

Eugene is a predominant DJ at Maks FM, a local radio channel in Sochi. When we first met, he always talked about Madonna. He invited me to his place and had a couple of glasses of vodka. He showed me the DVD of Madonna’s concert in St. Petersburg. He looked very excited whenever he talked about Madonna as if he was a real kid. After the DVD, he lighted a cigarette, looked in my eyes and said: “I can’t believe that I am now talking to someone from Hong Kong.” It was my first time of seeing his excited face without talking about Madonna. I think that was probably because of vodka.

About Brian Yeung

Growing up in Hong Kong, pearl of the orient, I have been exposed to many cultures throughout my upbringing, from Sushi to British Top Talents and Tetris. And yet, after my stay in Europe, Russia and Southeast Asia for study and work, I realise a lot of cultural perception and presentation are just myths and stereotypes. Exploring the real accent of a particular country and its culture becomes my agenda of traveling. I value travel as a way to discover the diversity of life choices. After all, life is just the consequence of our many life choices; the one who is aware of its diversity is the luckiest person alive.
